Natural skincare products should be free of hazardous toxins, but that’s not always the case. Most manufacturers are honest, but since the term is not regulated or legally defined, they can use it if they want to.
Another thing to consider is that some naturally occurring ingredients are not completely safe. An example that comes to mind is Balsam of Peru, a fragrance ingredient. It is a common cause of allergic reactions.
Any essential oils, which are really just concentrated plant fragrances, can cause allergic reactions. They can be particularly irritating to the skin at high concentrations. While they might smell good and some of them could be beneficial when used in aromatherapy, wearing a product that contains them all day could be irritating.
Even lead is a naturally occurring substance. Lead can be absorbed through the skin. Researchers are particularly concerned about products that are designed to be used around the mouth. If they are colored, they could contain lead.
It has been hard to come up with a legal definition, because petroleum is a naturally occurring compound. Petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin wax are derived from petroleum and could honestly be present in natural skincare products, but those ingredients are not good for your skin’s health. They feel greasy and clog the pores. They can contain cancer-causing contaminants.
Alcohols are similar. They could honestly be included, but that doesn’t mean they are safe. They change the skin’s pH balance, strip away protective oils and contribute to hyperpigmentation.
Good ingredients are plant-based oils like grape seed oil and Shea butter.
Nutrients such as proteins and antioxidants are good for your skin’s health and appearance. They moisturize, support collagen growth and help to repair free radical damage, which is a cause of wrinkles and other signs of aging.
So, good natural skincare products can also be anti-aging solutions, just as long as they contain the right ingredients. One of the most effective anti-aging ingredients judging from recent clinical studies is the antioxidant coenzyme Q10. Creams containing it work to reduce wrinkles and repair sun damage.
Any product must be well-designed if it is to be effective. A product that contains mostly cheap fillers like petrolatum is just a waste of money, because it will not improve your skin’s health or appearance.
Hopefully the foregoing information will help you find safe and effective natural skincare products. You do deserve the best.
