Cosmecueticals: The New Age Of Cosmetics

Out of the consumer drive to have more natural and nourishing ingredients in skin care products and cosmetics, a new generation of skin supplements has been born. Cosmecueticals, a word that is a hybrid of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, offers the buying public additional enrichments in their skin care choices.

The type of products that fall under this label are topical oils, creams and skin care lotions, which have been enriched with natural herbs, vitamins and minerals to aid and restore the skin. They are not actually a pharmaceutical product, so they don’t fall under the same legislative mandate as, for example, medicinal grade hydrocortisone would. Therefore, it’s important to read the labels and make informed decisions about the types of ingredients you are willing to use.

As with all commercial skin care products, not every skin type will respond well to the ingredients. The term cosmecuetical has left many patrons feeling anything in that category will be safe for their skin. However, the same rules apply for sensitive skin and other types of skin when choosing a lotion under this category, since not all skin will respond to the compounds in the creams.

Cosmecueticals simply put, offer more than just a camouflage. Anti-aging products use natural ingredients to increase collagen and elastic production of the skin, as well as offering moisturizing properties traditionally associated with face creams. Therefore, not only is it serving your skin in the short term, but it offers longer term repairing effects as well.

While much of the hype around cosmecueticals is to market and sell the products, there is certainly validity in choosing this type of product. What you put on your skin, in the form of creams or lotions, should do more than just give your looks a boost. Adding much needed minerals, vitamins and other nutrients to your skin is what differentiates a regular cosmetic product from a cosmecuetical product.

With more and more companies borrowing the cosmecuetical label to advertise their products, the consumer is now (finally) being offered a better choice of skin care products for anti-aging and other conditions.
